Claude Monet

Monet painted outdoors with the new tube paints and synthetic pigments and all but banished black, building shadows from blues and violets. His series of haystacks and of Rouen Cathedral record how the color of one subject changes with the light.

Across 11 works, the colors are mostly brown (40%), gray (21%) and green (14%). On average the canvases are light, moderately saturated and warm. Signature colors, used far more here than across the collection: rich olive, yellow, muted lime green, muted green and dark muted lime green.
